Understanding Technical Rescue Certifications and Why They Matter
Most people are familiar with structural firefighting in a general sense — flames, hoses, ladders. Fewer people know much about technical rescue, which is its own specialized discipline within fire and rescue service, covering situations that have nothing to do with fire at all. Over the course of my career I earned Pro Board–accredited certification in all four major technical rescue disciplines, each at both level I and level II.
Confined Space Rescue
Confined space incidents involve extracting someone from a space that isn't designed for continuous occupancy and often has limited entry/exit, poor ventilation, or atmospheric hazards — tanks, silos, utility vaults, and similar spaces. It requires specialized air monitoring, ventilation, and rigging skills, because a rescuer who enters without the right training and equipment can become a second victim.
Trench Rescue
Trench collapses are exactly as dangerous as they sound — a cubic yard of soil weighs roughly 3,000 pounds, and an unprotected trench can collapse with no warning. Trench rescue training covers shoring and stabilization techniques, because the very first priority before any rescue can happen is making sure the trench won't collapse further on the rescuers themselves.
Structural Collapse Rescue
This discipline covers locating and extracting people trapped in a partially or fully collapsed structure — assessing what's structurally stable enough to work in or around, breaching and breaking techniques, and coordinated search methods. It's some of the slowest, most methodical work in the fire service, because speed without stability just creates more collapse.
Vehicle & Machinery Rescue
Beyond standard vehicle extrication, this covers rescues involving industrial and agricultural machinery — situations where someone is entangled or pinned by equipment that requires a specific understanding of how that machinery works before it can be safely disabled and the person freed.
Why this background matters outside the fire service
All four disciplines share a common thread: a methodical, safety-first approach to situations where cutting corners gets someone hurt. That's the same mindset I've carried into commercial electrical and construction work — assess before acting, respect what you don't yet know about the situation, and don't improvise past your training.
